Windows SDK

Before Visual C++ and MFC emerged, these Microsoft C libraries and tools were needed to make software targeting Windows.

Knowing how the Windows SDK works eases the understanding of MFC.

I used this toolkit quite a bit in the late eighties and early nineties.
