The resulting video phone is truly a killer application. The image and sound quality is much better than what you get from most PC based solutions. And it's cheap, too!
My job in this project was creating a demo application that was used to sell the idea before the hardware was ready, as well as the final video phone application. Most low level stuff was handled in a library supplied by the wizards who made the hardware.
